GAGA concert

Just some proof that i'm going to the Lady Gaga concert at the O2 arena in London tomorrow ( 16th December )

Hopefully, as well as enjoying the concert I am hoping to gain some inspiration from her costumes and the way she poses to help me come up with some good ideas for my magazine cover as Gaga will be my main influence. I am hoping to take loads of videos and pictures and to post them on here.

Lesson of 13th December

Today I uploaded my analysis of two magazine covers and have now started doing my music magazine research, I did not complete my slideshow so I shall try to finish it over the christmas holidays. During the holidays I need to start taking images for my magazine front cover. This week I am going to a Lady gaga concert so I will try and take as many images as possible there as she is my inspiration of my magazine front cover.

Cover Analysis

One of the differences between these two covers is the genre of these magazines. Q is known to be very sophisticated and has a reputation of being more up market. The genre of Q is very general, it mainly consists of pop bands and icons but also contains the next best thing in the music business. Whilst NME is more down class, the use of thin paper used for the magazine compared to gloss in Q. NME is known for mainstream indie music and always consists of upcoming bands.

            One of the similarities of these two covers is the colours used. The use of red, white and black are used in both of these covers. This could be because of how both artists are viewed as very aggressive and powerful. On both of these magazine you have two of the biggest artists in the world in 2010 which shows power and importance.

On the NME cover the use of the colours is to show the darker side of Eminem. This could be because of his persona in the music business. His songs have always been quite dark and serious, especially in his new album, this is important as it could be a way in which to promote the new album or show what is new album is like seeing as this is his return to music after many years.

The use of the colours in Q magazine is because of the power lady gaga has in the music business and the influence she now has. One of the things that I thought was clever on the front of the cover is one of the coverlines used. Right next to Lady Gaga’s head is the “100 most shocking moments in music” the use of this coverline is very clever as lady gaga has been known to have done many shocking things in the music business. This shows the reflection from the cover to whats inside.

The same thing happens in the NME cover too. Right next to eminem’s head is a T in the park review special. This reflects back into the front cover as Eminem was a headliner of this years T in the Park which shows what you will expect inside the magazine.

Another thing in both covers which I thought was interesting was the use of the fonts on the cover. Both magazines use fonts that match the artist on what fonts they use on their album covers. For example on both of the main coverlines they use the fonts used on their albums. This is to help make the reader notice who the main cover is on better.

            The images are interesting on both covers. The use of direct eye contact on the Q magazine shows power and importance of lady gaga.  Whilst Eminem is looking away from the camera, this is because of the use of the image. It makes it clear that the image is of Eminem onstage performing as it shows he is looking out into the crowd. The use of this image shows the power Eminem has at a concert and shows his power and yet also his darkside. 

Lesson Of 6th December

Today, I was able to upload the presentation that wouldn't upload last week. I also finished uploading all my previous work for the college magazine. I have now started analysing two music magazines and will finish it for homework. Next week I will start my research for the music magazine I would like to base my music magazine on.

Reflection Of My Student Magazine

The software I used to create my Student front cover was Adobe In Design, to start off with I struggled to get around the software as it was my first time using it but I finally got the hang of the software. To take the pictures for my magazine I used a digital camera from the college.

            From the proposal I wanted my magazine to be a winter edition as the college I go to has a lot of christmas concerts due to the music department, which made me think of the idea to have a lot of information on what college events are happening and gave me the idea to have a very christmassy concert front cover. However, this did not happen due to the time space I had, there were no concerts happening at the time I needed to take the photographs for the cover. I still wanted to have a winter edition but I needed to find another way of showing this.

           I really struggled to make the magazine look wintery, this was for many reasons. One of which was due to the picture I chose. Even though the picture was very strong and used a lot of techniques like the rule of thirds and the use of parallel lines I struggled for the colours to stand out. I originally wanted to use reds and purples but due to the picture being in the library the red merged with the books and the purple only stood out on the masthead.

           I then came out with the idea of using blues and whites for the cover, I really liked the idea of these colours as it really exaggerated what edition this magazine was and matched with the image. To use the white I mainly had to edit the text to get an outline of blue so you could still read it and make it stand out. I also used a lot of background shapes and put the text over it to make it stand out. I really liked this idea as I thought it represented the theme very well and the colours stood out. I also thought it looked sophisticated but not to the extent that didn't interest the targeted audience which is college students.

            To an extent I followed my proposal quite a lot, the coverlines I thought of I still used but did not use the texts I came up with on the proposal. This was because I did the proposal before getting used to Adobe In Design which meant I didn't know all of the fonts In design used.

Here are some of the ideas I came up with for my college magazine before my final cover. The reason why I tried so many different colours for the college magazine was because I couldn't find the colours I liked to match the winter issue and also it was hard to find colours that stood out infront of the image.

After last weeks technical difficulties we were able to upload the presentation of the case study of ipc media, the reason why I have uploaded it as the preparation work for the college magazine is because it helped me understand the background of the magazine business and how magazines are owned by different publishers which we had to think about to understand and start thinking what publisher we would want to use for our college and music magazine.
